For my second PPA, I'm thinking about doing a lesson about the first Thanksgiving. It would be neat to have kids look at it from both the pilgrims' and Native Americans' points of views. There's a book I've found that tells the story from both views. I thought it might also be interesting to have students look at some sources from around that time and try to interpret them.

I've got some interesting things on that too. I'll bring them along on Monday. There's a book called 1491 by Charles Mann that I've been reading in conjunction with a social studies unit I've been co-planning with a teacher and intern at Everson Elem. It has really interesting ideas about the native perspectives (it's adult non-fiction). Many of those ideas have been summarized in a Smithsonian magazine article by the same author. I think you can find stuff by googling. You might also look for Plimoth Plantation (I think that's the spelling) where they have lots of interactive resources.

Good luck!

I have an interesting book called Eating the Plates: A Pilgrim Book of Food and Manners by Lucille Recht Penner. It has chapters called Bugs for dinner, We all scream for pudding, and Don't throw your bones on the floor. This is of course a new look at the pilgrims and it has some recipes -fresh corn soup-bannock cakes-baked pumpkin stuffed with apples and more. It is an interesting read about the average life of a pilgrim.
